HNP Landscape Architecture collaborated with CDFL Architects + Engineers and the City of Dothan on the master planning, schematic design, and construction documentation for a new pickleball complex at Rip Hewes Athletic Complex. The highly anticipated facility opened in July 2026 and brings 25 covered pickleball courts, including a championship court to the community.
Designed for year-round play, the fully covered complex includes lighting and overhead fans to support extended use regardless of daylight or weather conditions. Beyond planning and schematic design, HNP provided detailed construction documents for court layout, surfacing, fencing, netting, and landscaping. The project features innovative court construction using MAPEI’s Mapecrete system beneath the playing surface in place of asphalt. The fiber-reinforced concrete was incorporated to help minimize cracking and improve long-term durability. The courts are finished with MAPEI Mapecoat TNS Finish 3, providing consistent ball bounce, skid resistance and optimized texture. It is certified as ITF Category 3 (Medium Pace) creating an ideal balance between ball friction and player traction. All courts were designed to meet standards for hosting USA Pickleball tournaments, positioning Dothan as a premier regional destination for the rapidly growing sport. The Dothan Pickleball Complex represents a $6.5 million investment in the future of recreation for the community.
